Winter Heating Tips for Your Home

Winter Tips for Homeowners

Is your home warm enough for the blustery winter we typically get here in SE Pennsylvania?

winter heating tips for your homeWinter is here homeowners. All summer long, we enjoyed our time outside our homes – in the backyard barbecuing, playing at the park with our families, or taking trips down the Jersey Shore.

Now that we’ve moved into cooler weather, we’re moving most of our activities into the home as well. Is your home ready for winter? Is your home able to keep you and your family comfortable all winter long?

In order to maximize the efficiency of your furnace during the winter months, Our HVAC team came up with a few tips and things you should do to keep your home comfortable.

So – let’s dive into winter tips for you to keep your home warm and comfortable:

Use Your Curtains & Blinds

Open curtains during the daytime to let your home soak up some sun-rays. That big ball in the sky called the sun is a natural heat source. The best part about that is…. it doesn’t cost you a thing. Just be sure to close the curtains at night. Curtains and blinds can act as another layer of insulation.

Fix Cracks & Leaks

Are you someone who likes throwing your hard-earned money away? Then leave those cracks and air leaks in your doors and windows alone. Let the warm air you’re paying for escape through those cracks.

If you don’t want your furnace to be working double-time this winter and throw your money away, be sure that any cracks or leaks in your home are sealed to prevent cold air from getting in immediately. Consider fixing the problem with some caulk and weatherstripping. A simple weekend project. Otherwise, all that warm air you’re paying to pump through your home is likely escaping through those cracks.

Winterize Your Air Conditioner

Since you live in the Northeastern part of the United States, chances are you won’t be using your air conditioner during the winter months. Be sure you take steps to winterize your air conditioner.

Prior to preparing your air conditioner for the winter, be sure you shut power off to the unit. Then, start the process of removing any debris from the unit such as leaves and small twigs. To protect against damage such as falling debris or ice, cover the unit with a protective cover.

By moving your couch or recliner away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. One Tip You May Not Think Of…

Move Your Couch or Recliner

Having your favorite seat in front of the radiator is great, especially when you’re watching the game or catching up on your shows. BUT… did you know doing so is absorbing heat that could be warming the rest of your home?

By moving your couch or recliner away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. This goes for your curtains or drying clothes – keep them away from the radiator, so you can get the most out of your home’s heat source.
